Homeschooling Drivers Ed
By Ann Zeise
When it comes to home instruction, not one other course seems
as vital as drivers education. It begins with learning safety
as a pedestrian, and progresses through bicycle safety. Then,
before you know it, you have a teen who wants to earn a drivers
license and drive the family car in traffic! at night! during
bad weather! In order to ensure that homeschooled teens begin
to understand the responsibilities that go with driving, A to Z Home's
Cool has affiliated with DriversEd.com to bring you the best
preliminary drivers education class in the country. This "Flashy"
fun course will get the points across from the comfort of your
own home, on your computer, at your own pace. While the course
is only required in some states, the material covered is what
every parent wants their child to know before they take off in
the family car.
In some jurisdictions, helping your teen to get their drivers'
license is no different than for any other parent. Also, insurance
rates for your teen would be no different than a peer in public
or private school. But in some jurisdictions, it is harder for
homeschooling teens to either get their permit or license or
to get a "good student" insurance discount.
The purpose of this feature article is to help any parent
"homeschool" drivers ed, and especially to help those
who might otherwise find they have a "homeschooling handicap"
in their area. Additions from readers
are welcome at any time, as this is a "living document"
that I will edit as more information comes in. Be sure to mention
your state, province or country!
A Driver's Prayer
"God, impress upon me the great responsibility that is
mine when I get behind the wheel of an automobile. When I would
be careless remind me that I have in my hands the power of life
and death. Write indelibly upon my consciousness that I am a
potential murderer, that in one careless moment I could put an
end to the lives of some innocent victims, my family and myself.
Help me be thoughtful, patient and in control of myself as
I drive this car. Help me to extend the same kindness and consideration
to others that I would like them to extend me.
Give me, O God, a sense of perspective. Let me never become
so foolish that I would take a chance with my own life or anyone
else's just to save a few minutes. You know, O God, that heaven
is full of people who made that mistake. Amen."
