Read in Remembrance

September 11, 2002
A time to share stories of freedom, courage and hope.

Dateline: 7/13/02

by Tracey Thomas Fetting

As an educator and an American, I feel a call to do something especially significant to remember those lost and to thank those who are still working so hard today to rebuild, heal, and strengthen the liberties and freedoms we hold so dear.

Read in Remembrance will be a time for children, teachers, parents, and community leaders to come together and share books and writings that teach and inspire; words that celebrate and honor the bravery and spirit of those who lost their lives that day.

Please join us on Wednesday, September 11, 2002, as we take time out of our school day to read and remember. We plan to set aside 51 minutes for Read in Remembrance (approximately one second for each of the 9/11 victims) Ideally we will begin at 8:46 AM (ET).

Invite your students to bring in their favorite stories of friendship, courage, and hope. Ask parents and grandparents to write letters or poetry that can be shared with the class about their families' journeys to or origins in this country, and the reasons they are proud to live in "the land of the free and the home of the brave." Read biographies of the courageous women and men who have helped shape our nation.

Enjoy thinking, learning, and reading together!

Please share this idea with others.

It is my desire that this simple project will bring hope and healing to students throughout our country.

Thank you,

Tracey Thomas Fetting
