Home = Education Conference Photo Album
Page 3
Dateline: 8/28/99
By Ann Zeise
At some of the sessions I attended at the Home=Education
Conference in Sacramento on Saturday, August 21, and Sunday,
August 22, 1999, I took photographs of the speakers. I'm not
including here the speakers I've already posted on the "Ice Ceam Social" page.

Peggy O'Mara
Peggy is the editor of Mothering
Magazine. She spoke on Home As Haven: Why there's no place like
home for real learning. She encouraged us to focus not on "How
do I keep up with the public schools?" but with "How
can I help this child express their unique self?"
In Canada they apparently call homeschooling "domestic
education." Peggy suggested a better name: "WILD Education"
because our children aren't caged all day.
She suggested some activist reading:
The
War Against Parents
by Sylvia Ann Hewlett, Cornel West, Eric West
Soul
of a Citizen : Living With Conviction in a Cynical Time
by Paul Rogat Loeb

Dawna Markova
A marvelous actress, Dawna portrayed
at least a half a dozen teenagers given the same assignment (to
read The Diary of Anne Frank, write a report and build
a model of her attic) and how each, according to their nature
and learning style might accomplish the assignment or not.
Dawna is the author of:
The
Open Mind : Exploring the 6 Patterns of Natural Intelligence
Learning
Unlimited : Using Homework to Engage Your Child's Natural Style
of Intelligence
No
Enemies Within : A Creative Process for Discovering What's Right
About What's Wrong
Your Child Is Smart

Harold Jacobs
Harold Jacob's high school-level math
books, as Pam Sorooshian commented, are the only "text"
books that unschoolers seem to really like. The author, like
his books, are personable and fun. His are the books our high
school son uses.
Elementary
Algebra
Algebra for the homeschool student who really wants to know and
apply algebra.
Geometry
High school geometry text that is thorough, yet done in a "right
brain" way.
Mathematics:
A Human Endeavor
A book for those who think they don't like the subject, and a
popular book among teen homeschoolers for that reason.
