Crystal Cave Homeschool Day
Monday, April 20, 2009, 10am - 4pm
Crystal Cave, Spring Valley WI, will host Home School Day April 20, 2009 from 10-4. Families who school their children at home will be able to visit Crystal Cave and receive the same discount offered to school groups of 15 or more without meeting the minimum group requirements.
Cave tours will leave frequently beginning at 10:30 am. After watching a short educational video on Crystal Cave, homeschoolers will leave on an hour long, guided tour through the myriad passages of Wisconsin's longest cave. Guides will discuss the history of the Cave including geology, bats found in caves, and the development of Crystal Cave. It's one of the most unique educational experiences in the area for both kids and adults.
In addition to cave tours, the Lost River Mining will be available for panning. Participants purchase a bag of ore mix and pan for minerals in the water sluice. Each participant also receives a collection bag and mineral identification card to encourage learning about rocks and minerals.
Cost for the event is as follows: Cave tour/educational video, $5.50 (preschool-elementary), $7.50 (middle school-high school), and $8.50 (18+). Gem panning is available for $4.50 (includes bag of ore mix, collection bag and mineral identification card).
