Bicycling

Events

Annual Homeschool Hiking/Biking Event
Held each year the last full week in May all across the United States. We are asking for individuals and groups involved in homeschooling to set up events in their areas. Your event may be as simple as putting a press release in the newspaper to get all your homeschooling buddies together for a hike or bike.

Critical Mass
A monthly bicycle ride to celebrate cycling and to assert cyclists' right to the road. The idea started in San Francisco in September 1992 and quickly spread to cities all over the world. This site attempts to be the most complete guide to local Critical Mass rides around the globe.

Fun

Bike Games
Ok, first off, this is not Gamezone, or Gamespy or Happy Puppy (which all stink compared to the now dead Gamecenter.com (R.I.P.)). The games here are either java, shockwave, or small downloads.

Plan a Bicycle Rodeo
A fun kid summer outdoor activity is a bicycle parade and rodeo. Children love to show off their bikes and riding skills. If they donŠt have a bike, they can bring their scooter.

Learning and Earning Scout Badges

Boy Scout Cycling Merit Badge
Requirements for this badge are a good outline for anyone wanting to master safe cycling.

Cub Scout Bicycling
Skills to learn to get the belt loop and sports pin.

Teaching a Kid (and Adult) to Ride a Bicycle
Contemporary specialist advocate an alternative method which separates learning the skills to ride a bike so that the learning doesn't have to master everything at once.

Teach Your Child Well: Bicycle Safety Issues
The attitudes parents instill in their child now will help to determine how he or she will ride for years to come. If parents work at it from the beginning, if they teach their child as if his or her life depends on these lessons -- which it does -- then they will feel more confident when their kids rides down the road.

Literature

Bicycle Stories
My two favourite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything. The perfect day: riding a bike to the library.

Maintenance

Bicycle Maintenance Guide and Riding Tips>
This little manual is intended as a summary of what I have learned over the years. I am not a professional mechanic. All of what I say here is the result of personal experience and opinion.

Science of Cycling
Why fat or thin tires? Why do gear ratios matter? Knowing these things will help you cycle farther and faster with more ease.

Racing

Northern California High School Mountain Bike Racing League
When Coach Mark was helping draft the Bylaws, as a homeschooling father, he made sure that homeschoolers were not excluded like they are in every other CIF governed high-school sport. The rules have evolved over time, but basically allow homeschoolers to form County-based composite teams.

Safety

Locking Your Bike
Tips on making your bike as close to theft-proof as can be. From the National Bike registry.

The Noblest Invention : An Illustrated History of the Bicycle
The Noblest Invention : An Illustrated History of the Bicycle (Hardcover)
by Lance Armstrong
A unique history of the bicycle that illustrates, through personal essays and breathtaking photography, why this simple machine has captured the imagination of people of all ages around the world.

My Rows and Piles of Coins
My Rows and Piles of Coins
(Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Books)
by Tololwa M. Mollel, E. B. Lewis (Illustrator)
Saruni works hard, saves all his coins for months and months, and dreams of buying a bicycle--only to discover that he does not have nearly enough money.

Duck on a Bike
by David Shannon
Shannon serves up a sunny blend of humor and action in this delightful tale of a Duck who spies a red bicycle one day and gets "a wild idea." Sure enough, in no time flat, he's tooling around the farmyard. (A homeschool story, if I ever heard one!)

Super Fast, Out Of Control!
Super Fast, Out Of Control!
by Louis Sachar, Amy Wummer (Illustrator)
Somehow, word has gotten around that Marvin is going to ride his new bike down "Suicide Hill."
