About

Animated Guide
Make this your first stop toward understanding how hurricanes form and do so much damage. From CBBC's Newsround.

Canadian Hurricane Centre: Just For Kids
Hurricanes are very large and powerful storms. They can bring heavy winds, rain and flooding to a region. Scientists are studying how these storms form, how they work and where they go so that we can be better prepared when a hurricane hits.

FEMA For Kids: Hurricanes
When they come onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and heavy waves can damage buildings, trees and cars. The heavy waves are called a storm surge. Storm surges are very dangerous and a major reason why you MUST stay away from the ocean during a hurricane warning or hurricane.

Horrific Hurricanes
The Why Files is wondering. What's in the way of better hurricane predictions? And exactly how do these titanic storms work?

Sky Diary Kidstorm * facts about hurricanes
Hurricanes are mind-boggling in their size and strength. Modern technology lets us see how big hurricanes are and track them through satellite imagery, while storm-penetrating aircraft measure their strength, in terms of wind speeds and atmospheric pressure.

Hurricane Hunters

Flying into the Eye of a Hurricane
As the planes struggle toward the eye, the pilots fight intense updrafts and downdrafts. The hurricane pelts the planes with rain and hail. Static electricity builds up and then discharges with a flash and a loud bang, causing the crew's hair to literally stand on end.

Hurricane Hunters
You're just in time... head across the hall to our auditorium, and join the crew for the pre-mission briefing. Then you can decide if you really want to do this!

Tropical Twisters
Fly right along into the eye of a hurricane. Take a VR tour of one. See if your name has ever been used for a hurricane name.

Measuring Hurricanes

Measuring hurricane intensity: the Saffir-Simpson scale
The Saffir-Simpson scale shown in this table is the most frequently used system for measuring hurricane intensity. It ranks hurricanes on a scale from 1 (74mph) to 5 (155mph or higher) based on the intensity of their maximum sustained winds.

Stories

Homeschooling a Hurricane
The boys and I have been homeschooling this hurricane. The older ones have hung over my shoulder as I have tracked the tropical waves coming off of Africa on the Internet. Most of the storms have just dwindled away.

Tracking Hurricanes

Hurricane & Storm Tracking for the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans
The StormTrack system receives weather data from the US National Weather Service via satellite. The system creates an entry for each tropical depression, storm, or hurricane when the National Weather Service begins issuing advisories.
