- Lewis Carroll : The Complete Illustrated Works
: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass
and What Alice Found There, the Hunting of the Snark
by Lewis Carroll
- Carroll, one of 11 children, knows his audience well. His
stories--clever, provocative, and bizarre--capture the imaginations
of children worldwide. Though a prolific storyteller from childhood,
he went on to become a mathematician, a fact evidenced by the
Tangled Tales serial, which contains a mathematical equation
in each installment.
- A Bear Called Paddington
by Michael Bond, Peggy Fortnum (Illustrator)
- The Browns first meet Paddington on a railway platform in
London. He is sitting on a battered suitcase, wearing an odd-looking
hat and a sign around his neck that reads, "Please look
after this bear. Thank you." And that is just what they
do.

Little
Men
The house seemed swarming with boys, who were beguiling the rainy
twilight with all sorts of amusements. There were boys everywhere,
"up-stairs and down-stairs and in the lady's chamber,"
apparently, for various open doors showed pleasant groups of
big boys, little boys, and middle-sized boys in all stages of
evening relaxation, not to say effervescence. By Louisa May Alcott

is homeschooled (as well as her friends). The book is called
How My Private Personal Journal Became a Bestseller and
it got chosen as one of 4 girl-power reads for summer by USA

-
- Surviving
the Applewhites
by Stephanie S. Tolan
- By the end of the book, I felt that she had really gotten
it right, especially in spirit - even if the Applewhites are
more interesting, eccentric, creative, and chaotic than most
of us homeschooling families. I liked the fact that the parents
are both flawed and yet wonderful... it made them much more real. Review
by Jennifer Dees with Jessica Chase.

- The Freddy Anniversary Collection: The First
Three Freddy Books in One Volume (Brooks, Walter R.,
Freddy Books.)
by Walter R. Brooks, Kurt Wiese, Michael Cart
- The only thing I didn't like about this 3-book collection
was the difficulty in finding a good stopping place after my
voice needed a break from reading it aloud to my kids--they always
begged for "just one more chapter!" No crude language
or gross-out humor here, as is the norm for many contemporary
books published for kids. ~Beth A. Nieman

- Just So Stories
by Rudyard Kipling, Barry Moser (Illustrator)
How did the camel get his hump? How did the leopard get his spots?
How did the elephant get his trunk? These are questions that
children around the world have asked for centuries, but it took
Nobel Prize winner Rudyard Kipling's lively, hilarious stories
to give them answers.
