Games & Puzzles

Lorax's Save the Trees Game
You'll need Shockwave to play this online game featuring Dr. Seuss' Lorax.

Leaves

Fall Foliage
Know before you go. Click any region for color-coded maps of where the autumn leaves are at their brightest. From the Weather Channel.

Chemistry of Autumn Colors
For the teen who is also studying chemistry. The green pigment in leaves is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light from the sunlight that falls on leaves. Therefore, the light reflected by the leaves is diminished in red and blue and appears green.

Leaf Invaders
Identify the leaves before they hit the ground. You get three mistakes or three leaves hitting the ground before the game is over. Watch out! Those leaves start falling faster as you get more points.

Preserve colorful beauty of autumn leaves
Requires adult supervision, but this page has several ways of saving beautiful fall foliage.

Why do Leaves Change Colors?
The best conditions for a beautiful autumn are just enough moisture and declining but not freezing temperatures. However, the colors are really based on day length.

Why Do Leaves Change Color in the Fall?
Separate colors in a green leaf using chromatography. Observe how light affects color development. Word Scramble puzzles as well.

Planting

Fruit Trees
Consider planting a fruit tree in your yard. There are miniature trees for even the tiniest yard and large ones if you have acres.

The Treetures
The Treeture family will show you how to plant trees and take care of them. Watch the animated gif as the forest changes with the seasons. A very imaginative site I think you'll really enjoy.

Projects

How to Hang a Tire Swing
A tire swing is a simple, inexpensive, old-fashioned addition to the kids play area that even adults can enjoy. Let's put one together. You will of course need a tree or appropriate support to hang your tire swing from.

Tree House Page
The kids kept bringing it up from time to time, and my response was always, "Yes, I will build it." Well, I finally decided that I wasn't going to come across a huge bonus of free time, so I had better just get started on it.

Uses

Did You Ever Eat a Pine Tree?
The eastern Indians favored the barks from the pine family, especially that from the white pine, although the inner barks of other trees, such as black birch and slippery elm, were relished.

Forests Are for Kids: How Paper is Made
Much of the paper produced in Idaho is made from "waste" -- the tree parts from logging and sawmill operations that can't be made into lumber. Idaho Forest Products Commission.

Real Trees 4 Kids
Learn about the Christmas tree growing industry. Ever thought of being a Christmas tree farmer?

Weird Trees

Drive-thru Trees
Did you know that in California there are trees so big that you can drive a car or even a camper right through a tunnel carved in the base? It's true! I've been through several. Useful for parting tourists from their loose change!

General Sherman: The World's Tallest Tree
If the trunk of the General Sherman tree were laid horizontally on a football field and the roots were on one goal line, the top of the tree would be 91 yards away on the opposite 9 yard line. More about Giant Sequoias.

Oldest Living Tree Found in Sweden
The visible portion of the 13-foot-tall (4-meter-tall) "Christmas tree" isn't ancient, but its root system has been growing for 9,550 years. The tree's incredible longevity is largely due to its ability to clone itself.
