Vikings

A bit of Swedish (and scandinavic) history
Although this period was short compared to the rest of the long history of Sweden, it is one of the most widely known. From Lulea University, Sweden. For teens.

Game of Hnefatafl
Hnefatafl simulates a Viking raid. The attackers are situated along the four sides, each side representing a ship. The king and the defenders are located in the middle of the board.

Games of the Viking & Anglo-Saxon Age
There are many finds of board games and gaming pieces from Scandinavia and from the British Isles. You'll probably recognize Backgammon and Nine Men's Morris.

Interesting Facts about the Vikings
The origin of the word "Viking" is unclear, but seems to derive from "vik" meaning "a small harbour". It refers to people who kept their seagoing ships in such harbours, from which they raided European coasts between AD 800 and 1000.

Leif Erikson
Leif Erikson was the first European to set foot in the New World, opening a new land rich with resources for the Vikings to explore. But for some unknown reason, the Vikings only made a few voyages to the New World after Leif. By Kevin A. Weitemier.

Viking It and Liking It - Time Warp Trio
The boys want to play Vikings Football Smashfest, but instead find themselves in A.D. 1001 with a bunch of real Vikings! It's one wild ride with Leif Ericson as they sail on his voyage of discovery to North America.

Viking Tales
So, as the family worked in the red fire-light, the father told of the kings of Norway, of long voyages to strange lands, of good fights. And in farmhouses all through Iceland these old tales were told over and over until everybody knew them and loved them. By Jennie Hall.

Vikings: The North Atlantic Saga
You'll love this Flash enhanced site, taking you along on the voyages when the Vikings first met the Native Americans about 1000 AD.
