Global Village School

Educating for a better world.

Global Village School offers an accredited, customizable, K-12 homeschool diploma program via online and text-based courses, complete with individualized teacher services. It is an international school with a creative, flexible approach and an emphasis on peace, justice, diversity, and sustainability. Their mission is "to provide a transformative education that empowers students to cultivate their gifts and passions and prepares them to be wise and capable stewards of the planet and each other." The school seeks to support students in leading authentic and meaningful lives, and help them develop confidence in their ability to make an impact on the world around them.

Whole Child, Healthy Planet
K-8 Curriculum Guides

The Global Village School elementary program focuses on engaging the whole child. The curriculum combines a student-centered approach (creative, flexible, holistic, and experiential) with an emphasis on learning styles and developmental stages.

The K-8 curriculum guides are centered on the four core principles of the Earth Charter:

  • Respect and Care for the Community of Life,
  • Ecological Integrity,
  • Social and Economic Justice,
  • Democracy, Nonviolence, Peace and Diversity.
  • While most standard curriculum is shaped by a textbook and a workbook, the Whole Child, Healthy Planet curriculum is built around the idea of "living books." It covers all of the core academic subjects in a way that engages students through a sense of enchantment, awe, and wonder as well as through the incorporation of art, music, nature, imagination, and story.

"We received our Whole Child, Healthy Planet curriculum guide last week. We are so excited that we found Global Village School. I feel as though the curriculum was written for our family. I truly never thought I'd find a curriculum... that "fit" us, but now we have! Thank you for helping us navigate an even more meaningful path of homeschooling with our kids. The resource list in Whole Child, Healthy Planet allows me to spend a little less time hunting for the right materials and more time enjoying learning with my kids! What a gift. ~ Parent, Beth Campbell-Rafdal.

    Exploring the Deeper Questions

Global Village School (GVS) provides a full K-12 curriculum that is accredited by NALSAS. The course content often goes beyond the traditional curriculum. Here are some examples from the high school curriculum:

  • The Economics course poses questions such as:
How are international monetary policies impacting the world? How are they impacting the lives of indigenous people and the state of the environment?
What is the real cost of that pair of basketball shoes - what natural resources were used, who made them and under what conditions?

  • The U.S. Government class begins with the quote "Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream things that never were and ask why not?" - Robert F. Kennedy.

  • A course named The Buddhist Path to Peace asks the question: "What is happiness?"
  • The class offerings at GVS range from the standard list of math, English, science and language classes to a unique set of courses on cutting-edge topics such as:

  • International Human Rights
  • Technology Education
  • Planetary Stewardship
  • Green Gardening
  • The Peacemakers
  • Literature of Diversity
  • History of Civil Rights in the U.S.
  • Global Spirituality and Activism
  • Coming of Age
  • Service Learning
  • How This School is Different

One of the things that distinguishes GVS is its creative and flexible approach. They work with outdoor schools, Indigo children, unschoolers, secular homeschoolers, Buddhists, Unitarian Universalists, Native American tribes, etc. They support self-directed learning and the motivation that comes from being free to follow one's passion. They customize curriculum based on student interests, needs, and learning styles. They seek to engage students in studies that inspire inquiry, encourage communication, and foster cooperation. Their goal is far-reaching: "We endeavor to support the development of thoughtful, compassionate and aware people who will provide a constructive and hopeful foundation for future generations."

Be Who You Are In the Global Village

The students are a diverse group, coming from many different regions and backgrounds. GVS is a good fit for independent thinkers and individuals with strong personal style or aspirations and interests that may not be supported in traditional school settings. The faculty at GVS appreciates individual expression and welcomes creative, unorthodox learning methods. Their compassionate and broad-minded assessment of student work is a core characteristic along with their high level of skill and experience. Families may select GVS because their former schools were not able to meet the needs of their children. Students who have been given various diagnoses such as ADD, ADHD, etc., can flourish in an alternative learning environment with a more specific or challenging curriculum. Other good fits for GVS are students who like to work at their own pace, are living abroad, or experience harassment at school for one reason or another. Each member of the diverse community of learners at GVS is respected for who they are and for the gifts they have to offer.

You are Already Learning - Why Not Get Credit For It?

GVS students can earn elective credit for many different kinds of life experiences, such as traveling, participating in cultural events, performing in community theater, pursuing a career in athletics, starting a business, organic gardening, studying alternative medicine, working on a political campaign, volunteering at a botanical garden, publishing an alternative newspaper, and operating a home recording studio.

    The High School Program

GVS offers both text and web-based courses. Students are free to collaborate with their teachers to customize a curriculum to match their unique interests, needs, and learning styles. In addition to courses like U.S. History, World Literature, Chemistry, Trigonometry, and Algebra, each core academic area also contains a course taking up the themes of peace, justice, diversity, and sustainability. Students become familiar with inspirational role models like Gandhi, King and others through courses such as Reflections on Peacemaking, World Religions, and Environmental Science. Service Learning at GVS converts theory and idealism into meaningful action in the students' local communities.

    Transcripts and Graduation

Students receive yearly transcripts and a diploma upon graduation. Accredited: by NALSAS

    The K-8 Program

    Freedom of Choice

    There are three curriculum options:

Standard: Whole Child, Healthy Planet Curriculum Guides

The preschool through 4th grade curriculum guides are designed to cooperate with a child's natural cycle of unfolding and development. The activities help young children to express their capabilities through artistic, imaginative, and creative experiences.

The curriculum guides for 5th through 8th grade use a rich, integrated, and experiential approach, with choices of activities to better accommodate different learning styles. All curricula for these grades give children an opportunity to be more independent in their studies and make their own book selections as well as go farther with areas of particular interest.

    Fully Customized

A Learning Styles coach works with you to customize a complete curriculum to meet the individual needs, interests, and learning style of your child. A list of recommended materials (books, CD-ROMs, videos, etc.), and information on how to order them will be provided to you.

    Design Your Own

You research and choose materials that you would like to use, then submit your list to GVS. They review it for grade level, content, etc. Once approved, you purchase the materials and begin.

    * Fully Customized and Design Your Own options are also available for high school.

    Partner School Program

GVS also offers a partner program in service to homeschool groups, small schools and schools on the rise. The curricular support available through GVS provides young schools with an immediate, accredited curriculum (which can be customized to align with their philosophy) and allows them to focus on getting organized while slowly implementing their own courses and teachers. GVS can provide a full program, be the official school of record (includes official records, transcripts, and diploma upon completion of graduation requirements) and provide full curriculum and teacher support. Or, they can "fill in the gaps," in those cases where a school or group might only need a few courses, a limited amount of teacher support or some consulting. Other schools will want to use the learning styles profile or request the design of individualized curriculum plans for their students.
