From the Easter Bowl Tournament, the "Open" for
Junior Tennis, to the World Gymnastics and Figure Skating Championships,
these
young athletes have one thing in common: They come
from the Laurel Springs
School, the "establishment distance learning program
in the sports world," says Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, director
and owner of the 13- year-old private program.
"We keep our costs reasonable for families who can't
afford the inflated prices of more recent programs, springing
from the boom in web-based education. Right now, nearly half
of the school's close-to-4,000 students are young tennis players,
gymnasts, ice skaters, golfers, equestrians, dancers, surfers,
hockey and soccer players.

Laurel Springs School.
"These days a growing number of young athletes are dropping
out of traditional schools so they can spend more time training
and traveling to their competitions. Marilyn Mosley estimates
that close to a half of all high level young athletes aren't
in public school. "It's just too hard on these kids
to balance their love of the sport with a school that demands
regular attendance with minimal days off for championship events."
Most of these kids have a dream of winning a top level sports
scholarship to college, or a chance to medal at a National championship
or Olympic Games, but many would just like an opportunity to
have a flexible schedule, a customized curriculum, and their
educational needs met while traveling. With Laurel
Springs School, this is just what they get.
Ice
Skating Champions Tanith Belbin and Katie Orsher, both recent
gold medal winners at Nationals in Portland, Oregon, attended
LSS. "They wouldn't have had the time to train and
travel throughout the year without a school like ours,"
said Amber Walker, P.R. representative for Laurel
Springs School. Tanith once told her that by going
to Laurel Springs School,
she gets the marks she deserves, both on and off the ice!
Laurel Springs School
is a grand slam for tennis players, also. Just ask LSS
students Alexa Glatch, Amanda Fink, Carla Tamborini and Julia
Cohen! These girls are a few of tennis' promising young champions.
According to a national survey conducted by the National Sporting
Goods Association, tennis players were the best educated out
of twenty other sports surveyed. It's no accident that
we have been educating young tennis players for over thirteen
year's now. These are just four of nearly four hundred tennis
players who love learning, instead of dreading the reprimands
from unsympathetic institutions.
Jr.
Champion surfers like Chad Compton and Dane Reynolds prefer taking
their classes with them to exotic locations all over the world.
"Laurel Springs
School has allowed me to have a flexible enough schedule
to go on surf trips and championships, whenever I want, while
maintaining my education. It's great!" says Dane.
Laurel Springs School
is the school of choice for gymnasiums too. Kirk Thomas has a
tutorial center in his gym, where he pays a tutor to oversee
his level 9 and 10 students while they learn their lessons. LSS
provides the curriculum and teacher services: "All the while
Kirk can take them to events and not worry about whether the
students' schools can coordinate their days off."
School representatives regularly attend competitions throughout
the country to cheer on our athletes, adding to the academic
support they receive year-round.It's no wonder so many aspiring
youths love their independent study and perform so well.
