Concerns and Hurdles

Compulsory Unschooling?
By Janet Lowry, HEM: I had no intention of plopping the child in a chair at 8:30 a.m. with a workbook. Imagine my surprise to find myself taking attendance, pretending to collect lunch money, and saying "ding-a-ling-a-ling" for recess time.

Dealing With Doubts
By Janet Keip. Like most unschoolers, we are convicted of the wisdom of our education choice yet there are times when doubts assail us. [HEM]

Developing a Homeschooling Philosophy: The Unschool Mambo
Having already been interested in issues of education, parenting and human potential for several years, I used the first year of homeschooling as a self-imposed sabbatical of rest, thought and study.

Differences In Common
As a staunch advocate of child-led learning, it made me uncomfortable to think about introducing ideas and activities to Ben rather than letting him generate his own. Melissa Allen, HEM J/A 2000.

Disposable Checklists for Unschoolers
Beginning unschoolers are often afraid. Without the touchstone of a schedule and a list, they don't know how they will see progress, or how they will recognize "sufficient effort" on the part of children or parents. By Sandra Dodd, HEM J/A 02.

Forget What You Know About Good Study Habits
An interesting article appeared in this morning's New York Times. It debunks much of what educators have been saying about how children learn, and seems to verify what unschooling families have known for years

If Nobody Makes You Do It
A conversation between Nancy Wooton, an unschooler, and a friend, a young mom starting to homeschool.

Interview with Sandra Dodd
Sandra Dodd's vocal presence is a bright spot of lucidity. Her mind is a virtual box of magic, her innovative ideas for learning are just plain fun, and her passionate belief in unschooling articulates a philosophy of life. By Emily Subler, HEM J/F 98.
A Radio Show Interview with Sandra Dodd.

On Unschooling and Life
How unsettling it is sometimes when I think that we have scoffed at the script and now we have to take responsibility for how it all turns out. If we'd done what was expected of us, nothing would ever be our fault. Right? By Ruthe Matilsky, HEM M/A 01.

Positively ADD - Parenting & Unschooling
Jan homeschools her 5 year old "very active" son, offering tips and links for others in similar situation.

Response to GMA Story on Homeschooling
Recently Good Morning America did a story on radical homeschooling. The story was quite inaccurate and did not portray a typical homeschooling family. It did not even portray a typical unschooling family. It was not, as described, radical homeschooling or radical parenting. It was more like radical non-parenting.

Self-Inspired Learning
But, despite living an unremarkable existence in the depths of suburbia, my kids all manage, at one point or another, to develop an interest in a subject I never bothered to introduce. By Karen Vogel, HEM N/D 08.

Unschooling Concerns
From now on I will try to let my instincts as their mother tell me what is right, and stop looking to other people all of the time.

World of Warcraft t-shirts from Hot Topic
Unschooling in World of Warcraft
"We know several kids who learned to read while playing these games," Traaseth said. "If you want to classify some of the things we're doing when we play World of Warcraft, the list could include math, reading, sociology, economics, creative writing and communications."

Unschooling : How Good Morning America Got It All Wrong
Here's reality -- any parenting choice that you make for your kids means that there are other parenting choices that you didn't make. By Lee Stranahan, Filmmaker, Writer, Photographer.

Viral Learning: Reflections on the Homeschooling Life
by Mary Griffith
Mary Griffith pulls no punches with her witty insights into her life as a homeschool mom, the making of herself into a "famous homeschool author," and her part as a vital leader in the growth of homeschooling. Review by Ann Zeise.

The Unschooling Handbook : How to Use the Whole World As Your Child's Classroom

by Mary Griffith
Unschooling, a homeschooling method based on the belief that kids learn best when allowed to pursue their natural curiosities and interests, is practiced by 10 to 15 percent of the estimated 1.5 million homeschoolers in the United States.

Learning All the Time: John Holt
Learning All the Time
by John Holt
In clear, direct language, Learning All the Time describes the crucial difference between learning (making sense of the world) and education (being forced to digest and regurgitate what someone else dictates). Without vitriol, John Holt exposes how our children are harmed more than helped by institutional schools.
