California Public ISPs

Some California homeschool families prefer not to homeschool independently, but rather through an institution operated either through the state or as an independent organization. This is a list of school districts with Independent Study or Home Study Programs outlined online.

About Independent Study

California Consortium for Independent Study
We are a state wide organization interested in the advancement of independent study programs. Independent study is an alternative mode of public school attendance.

Independent Study - California Department of Education
It is important to understand that when you join a public school ISP that you will have to follow far different rules and laws than do homeschool families. This site is designed for schools wanting to run an independent study program, but it will help you understand why others will not consider that you are "really homeschooling" if you join such a program.

District ISP Websites

Community Home Education Program
CHEP is the Orange County Department of Education's home independent study program, servicing and supporting parents who wish to teach their Kindergarten through 8th grade children at home. We provide this alternative public education to families who live in and adjacent to Orange County.

Etiwanda School District Home School Program
Complete Kindergarten thru 8th grade programs available. To learn more about registering your child in the Etiwanda Home School Program, please call the Home School office at (909) 803-3319.

Hearthstone School
A Kindergarten through 12th grade home school program for students residing in Butte County or an adjacent county. Daily instruction is centered in the home and community.

Horizons Home Study
Mt. Diablo Unified School District in Pleasant Hill. It began in 1985 and now includes over 300 students in K-12, with a diploma at graduation if the families desire one and take the testing. Many neighboring districts are trying to model their home study programs after Horizons.

Keema High School
Twin Rivers Unified School District offers a full time independent study program for grades 7 to 12.

Mountain View - Whisman School District
Through these programs, parents home school their children in compliance with State of California guidelines. Contact the Home School Director, Michiko Hashimoto at (650) 567-9757 for more information.

Oak Grove ISP
Independent Study gives parents the opportunity to support the instruction of their children in the home environment with professional guidance from supervising teachers and administrators. Involves Frost Elementary and Bernal Intermediate schools.

Santa Cruz Alternative Family Education
AFE helps each family design and implement their own mission and vision of education as a home/community-based family centered experience.

Shasta Independent Study-Home School
An alternative instructional program where students work independently according to written agreements under the supervision of a credentialed teacher.

Venture School
A fully accredited comprehensive high school which delivers the curriculum through independent study. Students come to Venture once a week and spend several hours with their teacher. San Ramon, CA.

West Covina Unified School District
Home Based Independent Study: an alternative education program that seeks to create a partnership between school and family, parent and child, to train and educate children to be responsible, literate and positive contributors to their community.
