Homeschooling on a Boat

Barenaked Family
We are Discovering our life together as a Family that started young and broke and excelled through Dad's career and acquiring stuff. We chose to let go donating and selling most everything but the bare essentials to ultimately spend as much of our free time together as we possibly could... on a boat!

A Different Tack: Home-Schooling on a Boat
We left Maine on March 25 2000. It was cold, gray and overcast, but casting off the lines was warmed by several hundred friends who came to bid us farewell. That moment may have been the hardest of the last 2 1/2 years of sailing. There was a brief question of, "Is this the right thing to be doing with our life, with our family?" But since then, we have never had to ask that question again.

Glayva Adventures
Heading back to Aceh, fridge full of cheese, and cupboards full of beer. Will be great to go back, as now aware of the spots we want to hang in for a while.....our secret uninhabited island, with the clearest blue water, mating turtles and coral reefs...not to mention an OK surf break, but shhhhh, I cant give too much away, or there will be a resort there next year!

Home Schooling on the High Seas
A typical day for the Adams kids is a little different. "School starts right after breakfast when we're in port or at anchor," says Jane Adams. "We take a mid-morning snack break and sometimes a quick swim. Then, we're back to school until lunch and then are usually finished around 1 p.m. After school, we are off exploring. This often involves swimming/snorkeling, land exploring, or sight seeing.

Homeschool Afloat
The Crumpler Family from Georgia extend their homeschooling to a learning experience afloat and took a Basic powerboating course aboard "Red Dog." Here are the young students' perspectives of their class.

Homeschooling Children Aboard
Now that we've lived aboard for almost seven years with our own kids, we are convinced.  Boating families are together families.  There is no doubt in my mind that our children are very different than their peers.

Kids Aboard
What would you do if you had a four year old or a fourteen year old on your boat for a month, or even just one day? There are many things that kids can do while on board to stay occupied, have fun and even learn something new.

Mom and Dad Deliver the World
Presented with a unique opportunity and blessed with an adventurous family, a veteran of the solo-sailing wars turns a boat delivery into a 13,000-mile field trip. By Alan Nebauer, Cruising World, October 1, 2002.

Soul's Calling
Our plan is to sail for 5 months through the Caribbean. We will then go through the Panama Canal, visit the Galapagos Islands and head to the South Pacific to explore the Marquesas Islands, French Polonesia, Cook Islands, Samoan Islands and any other islands that call to our anchor.

Starting School - St. John's, Newfoundland
I decided against doing a set program like Calvert because I like teaching, and I figured I could tailor the program to where we were and what we were doing if I made up my own syllabus. By Kate and Hamish Laird

Warm Winds
One family's offshore sailing adventure while homeschooling on a large sailing vessel.

Yacht Mollymawk
The Cruising Log and scrapbook of the crew of the yacht Mollymawk. See the Sheinas' "Home Education" category for stories about homeschooling aboard.

Zac Sunderland
Zac completed his circumnavigation on July 16, 2009! Less than a handful of people have done it under the age of 20.

Homeschooling on a Cruise Ship

How to Take a Homeschool Cruise
Taking kids on a homeschool cruise provides families the opportunity to travel with a group of other homeschool families. They learn through actual experience of seeing, walking, touching and being in educational ports of calls that serve as the kids' classroom. They study with their traveling group and make new friends. Planning is the key to making sure everything goes as intended by following these steps. By eHow Travel Editor.

Homeschooling on the Seas
Your children will be provided with not only a fun trip with all the amenities aboard Royal Caribbean's amazing ships, but an educational experience that will provide the basis for studies for years to come. Departing from ports in New Jersey (to Bermuda), Texas (to Caribbean), Florida (to Caribbean), California (to Caribbean) and Washington (to Alaska).

School At Sea - Homeschool Cruises
We are able to offer very special group rate pricing for fantastic vacations during off-peak periods. Six cruises planned at this time.

Unschooling Adventure Cruise and Conference
Oct 24, 2009, Departing Bayonne, NJ, for 5 Nights to Bermuda. Our Conference Organizer and Main Presenter is Dayna Martin.
